What happens at a probate registry?

Soon after submitting the application for grant to a probate registry, someone from the registry will get in touch.

You may be asked a few queries about the application. Further documents may be sent to you, such as a “renunciation”, if required.

When everything is finalised, you (the applicant) will need to swear an oath. This can be in front of a local solicitor or in a local probate registry. The Probate Wizard guides you through the process.

Grant of probate

At the probate registry

Some of the information you supplied in the application will be transferred to an “oath”, a formal document which you will be required to read and sign. You will also need to swear or affirm the oath. See our guide “Swearing an oath for probate”.

The meeting normally takes around 15 minutes.

After swearing the oath

If there is no inheritance tax due, and unless there are any problems, the registry will send the grant of representation and the number of copies you requested.

You should receive the grant around 10 working days after the interview.
