How to value a bank account: telephone or visit a branch

Like all assets, bank and building society accounts should be valued.

However, for estates thought to be worth less than £250,000 gross, an estimation based on information available will suffice. See our guide “Can I use rough valuations for probate?”.

Contact the bank

Whether or not a formal valuation is required, a bank will need a copy of the death certificate. We recommend sending a letter. See our guide “How to value a bank account: sending a letter”.

Alternatively, a telephone call to the bank may suffice for the time being.

Or you could visit a local branch, if there is one. Remember to take the death certificate. You may be given closure / transfer forms across the counter, or these may be sent to you.

Depending on the bank, it may only be possible to deal with the deceased’s accounts by correspondence.

Not sure how to deal with money, assets and debts?
