What are reasonable funeral expenses?

The funeral bill and funeral expenses can be deducted from the value of the estate, as long as they are “reasonable”.

The vast majority of funeral services can be considered a reasonable expense (those considered unreasonable would be unusually extravagant).

In addition to the service, expenses can include a reasonable amount to cover the cost of:

  1. Mourning expenses, such as refreshments after the service;
  2. Flowers;
  3. Newspaper advertisements; and
  4. The tombstone or plaque.

Reasonable funeral expenses do not include accommodation or travel costs.
