How to find the deceased's National Insurance number

You may need the deceased’s NI number during the probate process.

Here’s how to find it:

  1. Check for a National Insurance number card in the deceased’s belongings (note that these cards are no longer issued);
  2. Check the deceased’s P60 (the end of year tax statement from the deceased’s employer), P45, payslips or Self Assessment tax returns;
  3. Check National Savings & Investments correspondence and correspondence with HM Revenue & Customs (if any);
  4. Telephone the National Insurance Registrations Helpline on 0845 915 7006 (HMRC does not reveal NI numbers of the phone; you will be given the number by post);
  5. Complete the “Your National Insurance Number” form (CA5403) and send it to HM Revenue & Customs.

The format of a NI number

NI numbers are in the format AB 12 34 56 C.

Why might I need the NI number for probate?

The deceased’s NI number is not always required, but it is requested on inheritance tax forms, including the IHT205 and other tax forms such as the R27. It may be helpful in identifying the deceased’s National Savings & Investments accounts, state pension and state benefits.
