How to choose a probate registry

If a grant of representation is required, the application must be sent to one of a number of probate registries around England and Wales.

However, the applicant no longer has to attend the probate registry in person, as of March 2012.

Sending the application to a probate registry

If you are dealing with probate without the assistance of an authorised professional, the application will at least comprise the “Probate application” form (PA1), death certificate and other supporting documents, as required. If there is no inheritance tax to pay, it will also include the “Return of estate information” form (IHT205).

You can submit the application to any controlling probate registry.

More than one applicant

If there is more than one applicant, and the applicants are in different locations, you can submit the application to either/any of the appropriate controlling registries.

Locations and addresses of probate registries

Contact details of all probate registries can be found in the “Directory of Probate Registries and Interview Venues” (form PA4).

For enquiries, contact The Probate Service.
