Joint tenants

Two (or more) co-owners, for example of a house. If one dies, the other automatically becomes sole owner.

A gift of property owned as joint tenants in a will is ineffective. The principle of survivorship, whereby the surviving joint tenant receives the property automatically, takes precedence. 

The phrase has nothing to do with "tenants" in the usual (landlord and tenant) sense of the word.
