Solicitors
For many, solicitors are the first port of call for legal advice.
Regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, solicitors have undergone extensive training.
Many solicitors will offer a free initial consultation.
Depending on the nature of the work, fees can be high. The fees tend to reflect the solicitor's expertise and the resources available to him or her. Read about solicitor's fees and hourly rates.
Find a solicitor using The Law Society's solicitor search, commercial price-comparison services such as Wigster and Take Legal Advice (we have not tested these services) or through local advertising. Or, best of all, by word-of-mouth recommendation.
Other legal professionals
Many legal experts are not solicitors. They include paralegals, legal executives, barristers, trainee solicitors, will-writers and others.
The level of regulation, indemnity insurance and expertise can vary.
Other professionals
Many independent financial advisors ("IFAs"), accountants and other professionals have probate expertise.
