Jargon
We hate legal jargon. Some of the time it’s not possible or appropriate to avoid it, but we try. When we do use jargon, we assume you do not know the definition. That’s why we have a glossary of legal terms and links to key definitions in guides and videos.
Old-fashioned language
Even more than jargon we hate “herereinbefore”, “forthwith” and other old-fashioned terms.
Clarity and tone
We try to present information clearly and to strike a friendly tone.
Long sentences. We don't like them.
Page length
We try to keep all pages to a maximum of 700 words with liberal sprinklings of paragraphs and headers.
Capitalisation
We will begin a word with a capital letter only when appropriate, for example for proper nouns. Words often capitalised by lawyers such as will, lasting power of attorney, grant of probate and executor will not be capitalised here. For the arguments for and against see this entry at our blog.
Headings and titles
To aid interpretation, all our headings and titles will begin with a capital but will otherwise not be capitalised, unless appropriate (So Our Headings Will Not Look Like This).
See something you don't like...?
It’s our aim to follow this style guide, but we might get things wrong from time to time. If you spot anything that you think could be better, please give us a shout and we’ll fix it.
We never copy any text or videos from any other source, unless cited. Everything you read and watch has been created by us, for you.
